B2B Concert of Prayer – Where Have You Been? #816

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 816

“Where Have You Been?”

Exodus 3:4-5 (NKJV)  … God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.”

—————————————————————————————-

I arrived home late last night after work and was greeted at the door by my wife armed with a scrub brush.  I am no longer allowed into the house with dirty shoes.  It seems that no matter how much I would wipe my feet on the door mat, some residue of where I had been during the day always found its way onto the carpet.

Our shoes tell a story about where we have walked.  Moses encountered God on Mount Horeb and Joshua later encountered the pre-incarnate Jesus outside of Jericho.  At both encounters these men were instructed to remove their sandals since they were standing on Holy Ground.

Our lifestyle characteristics and the day to day life decisions we make define our ‘walk’.  Our shoes metaphorically represent our lifestyle ‘walk’. The sandals of Moses and Joshua were encrusted with the debris of their past travels in a fallen, sinful world.  This had to be left behind as they approached a Holy God.  Standing barefoot left them vulnerable, humbled, and surrendered before God.

The removal of our shoes signifies the surrendering of our will.  We choose shoes to wear based upon where we want to go and what we want to do.  From slippers to Crocks to sneakers and hiking boots there seems to be a shoe for every sport and activity.  Do we approach a Holy God humbly surrendering our will to Him, or do we reserve the right to go our own way?

The removal of our shoes signifies leaving the past behind.  Are we repentant before a Holy God eager to be set free from the bondage of our past sinful life? Far too many people harden their hearts and leave God’s presence unchanged.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that … you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. – Romans 12:2

The removal of our shoes signifies our trust in God and our dependence upon Him.  Being barefoot leaves us vulnerable.  We need God to ‘carry us’ across the difficult, rocky times of our life. We are humbled and there is no room for pridefulness when we are standing on Holy Ground in the presence of our Lord.

It does not matter where you have been or where your feet have taken you in the past.  Jesus took the sandals off the feet of the disciples and washed their feet at the Passover meal before His crucifixion.  He remains willing today to help you let go of your past sin and to wash you clean.  It is only through Christ that you can stand on Holy Ground before our Creator God.

Consider this: With the presence of Jesus Christ in you, that wherever your lifestyle walk takes you is Holy Ground.  May you choose your steps accordingly.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. – Proverbs 3:6

B2B Concert of Prayer – Different #815

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 815

“Different”

Ephesians 4:17-19 (ESV)  Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding … due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

—————————————————————————————-

Some people are different alright.  Their attire, mannerisms, speech, and persona are carefully selected to stand out and be noticed.  Everything about them screams, ‘Look at me!’  But this type of difference is not what is meant when we say that born-again Christians are to be different.

The difference of a Christian in our secular society is more subtle yet highly evident.  The Christian difference has others noticing the character, person, and power of Jesus Christ rather than the individual themselves.

He must increase, but I must decrease. – John 3:30

There is no escaping the fact that we are immersed in a world society that has become callous toward God.  We live, work, study, and play in this world yet we are not to become such a part of it that we blend in and compromise on biblical Christian values and morals.  If that happens, we lose our difference and ability to bring glory to God and Christ through our daily living.   So how are we to be different?

…speak the truth with his neighbor – Ephesians 4:25  Tell the truth, even when it costs you.

Be angry and do not sin – Ephesians 4:26 Exhibit righteous anger at injustice along with your coworkers and neighbors.  But can you do so without speaking coarse words or taking the Lord’s Name in vain?  Are you seen as seeking justice or vengeance?

Let the thief no longer steal – Ephesians 4:28  Remain productive at work even when others ‘steal time’ from their employer.  Don’t falsify or pad expense reports.  Purchase your own home office and school supplies rather than take your employer’s.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths – Ephesians 4:29 Are you known for your foul language or for speaking uplifting, wholesome words, seasoned with grace?

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. – Ephesians 4:31,32 Are you known as the constant complainer?  Do people steer clear and ‘walk on eggshells’ around you?  Is your anger on a ‘hair trigger’? Are your conversations poisoned with bitterness and slander of others?

We cannot live the different life in this world in our own strength of will and ability.  We must have the power of the abiding presence of Christ in our heart in order to be salt and light in this world.

May you start your day in prayer and worship seeking first His kingdom and righteousness.  May you continue your day in His power and presence as you shine the light of Christ in the darkness.  May you end your day with prayer, worship and thanksgiving for His love and provision.  Repeat daily and experience the joyous, peaceful difference of an overcoming life.

B2B Concert of Prayer – At Hand #814

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 814

“At Hand”

Jeremiah 23:23 (ESV) “Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God afar off?

—————————————————————————————-

We are constantly exhorted to ‘walk with God’ through sermons, devotionals, books and blogs.

In our reference Scripture, God declares that He is a God at hand and not afar off.  The term ‘at hand’ carries with it the meaning of being near in place, time, and/or personal relationship.

What does it mean to have God at hand and to walk with Him and how does it play out in the practical day to day life experience? Is it sufficient to keep God at hand and to walk with Him by carrying a religious icon in our pocket or around our neck? Or is it something deeper, something more personal, something childlike in faith and trust?  To answer these questions we need to look at some examples from God’s Word.

Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death … Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. – Genesis 5:24 & Hebrews 11:5

Enoch’s lifestyle, his day to day living was characterized by faith in God.  One can only imagine how many trials and life challenges Enoch faced in his 365 year lifespan.  Yet we are told that God was pleased with Enoch because of his faith in God to see him through them all.  For Enoch, God was always at hand.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. – Genesis 6:9

God’s Word tells us that the generation of Noah grieved His heart to the point that He was sorry that He made man on earth.

The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. – Genesis 6:5

Noah’s walk with God was characterized by purity, faith, and integrity.  He did not compromise his personal relationship with God by going with the flow of a corrupt society.

To walk with God at hand means having a personal relationship with the abiding presence of Jesus Christ every moment of our lives in all our circumstances.  We foolishly kid ourselves if we think God is not close at hand and that He does not see our compromises of integrity.

Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord. Jeremiah 23:24

May you soak in the abiding presence of God.  May you face each day with confidence, courage and power by His Holy Spirit. May you know peace without fear or worry as you hold His hand and walk with Him knowing that He is your refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

B2B Concert of Prayer – Limiting God #813

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 813

“Limiting God”

Psalm 78:19 (ESV) They spoke against God, saying, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness? …  Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?”

—————————————————————————————-

‘Think outside the box’.  If you have heard this exhortation once, you have heard it a thousand times.  It seems that in our human nature our tendency is to place limits and artificial boundaries on ourselves and others.  The result is that we limit our creativity in solving problems.  This gives rise to hopelessness and we give up.

The highly successful and innovative industries foster an environment of creative thinking among their employees.  There is no room in these companies for ‘box builders’ – those who stifle creative ideas with statements like, ‘It won’t work because we have never done it that way before’, and ‘That is the dumbest idea I have ever heard’.

The real danger to our ability to walk in faith and trust in God comes when we transfer our human limitations upon our perception of God.  In effect we put God in a box of our own making.  Can you imagine Peter telling Jesus, ‘I can’t walk on water because I have never done it before’?

In fact, Jesus was always exhorting His disciples to ‘think outside the box’.  In the feeding of the five thousand, the disciples wanted to send the people away and Jesus told them to feed the people.

But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” – Matthew 14:16

Jesus then showed them through the multiplying of the loaves and fish that God was not to be put in their box of limitations.

Jesus was also faced with Peter, the box builder when He told His disciples about His crucifixion and resurrection.  Peter rebuked the Lord.  In essence he told Jesus that that was the dumbest idea he had ever heard.

And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” – Mark 8:31-33

What faith challenges are you facing today?  Do you need physical healing? Is there someone you are praying for to receive salvation?  Do you need a job or better income?  Whatever your need, God is able to more than meet your need.  Don’t put Him in a box of your own making – no matter how large a box you think you have created – God is not to be contained; period – end of story.

May you have sufficient faith and trust to step out of the boat or box you are in – and let go of its side as you walk toward Jesus across uncertain territory whether it be on rocky wilderness ground or tumultuous water.

May you have sufficient faith and trust to say ‘Yes, Lord’ to His call without grumbling or questioning His provision for your journey along the path that He is leading you.

B2B Concert of Prayer – Living Stones #812

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 812

“Living Stones”

Ephesians 2:19b-21 (ESV)    …but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

—————————————————————————————-

The century-old house I had in Massachusetts had a magnificent cornerstone of Vermont granite. All the other foundation stones were aligned with that cornerstone.  Ultimately the platform for the whole structure of the house depended upon the integrity of the foundation beginning with its cornerstone.

Peter refers to Jesus as a ‘living stone’ and as a ‘cornerstone’ in his first epistle.  He also states that as Christians, we too are like living stones.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house … acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” – 1 Peter 2:4-6

Consider the following:

Jesus is the only cornerstone that will hold us up through eternity.  We cannot be our own cornerstone.  We cannot build a secure foundation without the Chief Cornerstone of Jesus Christ in our lives, our families, society, or in our government.

We are also called ‘living stones’.  As born-again Christians we have a duty and a privilege to be built up into a spiritual house, the Body of Christ, His church.  As living stones we each have a unique shape, strength, and characteristics that are our gifts from God.  There is a place in the foundation wall of God’s spiritual house uniquely shaped for you to fit into.  Once in place, we are supported by Jesus Christ.  We also receive support and contribute support to our brothers and sisters in Christ that make up God’s spiritual house. This is the local church community.

Where is the ‘church’ in America today?  How severe are the gaps in our society’s foundation wall because of apathetic, lukewarm Christians?  Will the church stand by and watch as the Chief Cornerstone of Jesus Christ is removed and replaced with secular humanism?

Will the church rise up and repair the breaches in our nation’s wall as Nehemiah did in Jerusalem?

We are at a critical juncture in America today.  There are fundamental differences in the platform foundations that those who seek to lead us stand upon.  Have you read their platforms?  Do the values expressed therein align with that of the cornerstone of the Word of God or do they align with the substitute god of secular humanism?  Will you rise up and do something about it?  I pray that you will.

B2B Concert of Prayer – Infinitely Valuable #811

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 811

“Infinitely Valuable”

Psalm 119:105 (ESV) Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

—————————————————————————————-

If you have seen any of the Ice Age movies you have probably fallen in love with the prehistoric squirrel-rat who has an insatiable passion for what seems to be the last remaining acorn.

While we may laugh at Scrat’s slapstick attempts to capture and keep his acorn – reflect for a moment on whether we share the same desire and passion to capture and keep the Word of God in our hearts and minds.

John Piper, Pastor and Theologian said: “It is impossible to exaggerate the worth of the Word of God.”  At a keynote address in July of 2011 in Atlanta, GA Pastor Piper outlined seven reasons why the Bible as God’s Word is of infinite value to us.  They are as follows:

1. The Word of God awakens and sustains faith.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. – Romans 10:17

2. It is by the Word of God that we receive the Holy Spirit.

Does he who supplies the Spirit to you … do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith… – Galatians 3:5

3. The Word of God creates and sustains our spiritual life.

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. – John 6:63

4. The Word of God gives us hope.

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through … the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. – Romans 15:4

5. The Word of God gives us freedom.

“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:31, 32

6. It is by the Word of God alone that we can defeat the devil.

…the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. – 1 John 2:14b

7. The Word of God is the source of full and lasting joy.

These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. – John 15:11

May you have an intense and persistent desire for the infinite and timeless truth of God’s Word. May you continually be in awe, reverence and worship of Almighty God as His Living Word awakens faith and sustains your spiritual life with all hope, power, freedom and joy through Jesus Christ.

B2B Concert of Prayer – Power Failure #810

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 810

“Power Failure”

2 Peter 1:3-4 (ESV)  His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence…

—————————————————————————————-

Florida has the highest lightning strike density of anywhere in the United States with about 12 strikes per square mile each year.  It is no wonder then that Floridians also experience numerous power failures.  It seems we are always resetting appliances and clocks with blinking displays.

Isn’t that the way we feel spiritually some times?  Have you ever felt that the power of God has failed you in some area or circumstance in your life?

It is important to note that the Lord’s power never fails.  We, however, do fail to use His power.  It is one thing to have power fail at its source.  It is quite another thing to fail to plug into the power source in the first place.

…God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5b

Do you take apart an electric appliance or device to troubleshoot its problem before first checking to see if it is even plugged in or receiving power?  Why then do we attempt to ‘fix’ our situations in our own strength and through our own devices before we tap into the power of God through prayer?

…The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. – James 5:16

Do you find yourself losing sleep and fretting about your current trials and difficulties?  Are you stressed out and at a breaking point?  Stop for a moment and make sure you are solidly plugged into the power of God that is available and within you as His child.

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you … for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. – 2 Tim 1:6

God’s answers to our prayers are not always immediate.  Sometimes our circumstances are protracted for a season as God develops our character and does a mighty work in our heart and soul.  When we seek first His kingdom and His righteousness we tap into the almighty and awesome power of God for living in this world.

For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. – 1 Cor 4:20

We may be in the flesh, but through Christ we have the fullness of the power of God’s unfailing power dwelling in us.

For in him (Jesus) the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. – Col 2:9

May you recognize that God’s power has never failed you.  May you seek first His kingdom and His righteousness thereby remaining solidly plugged into the power of His indwelling presence.

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy… – Col 1:11

B2B Concert of Prayer – Lawn Maintenance #809

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 809

“Lawn Maintenance”

James 1:21-22 (NIV) … get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.  Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says… and … keep … from being polluted by the world.

—————————————————————————————-

I was recently admiring a lush, green, weed and disease free lawn and it dawned on me how much our human spiritual condition can be likened to lawn maintenance.

Lawns don’t start out lush, green and free of weeds.  Many start out as weedy, rough, rocky, debris laden soil full of roots and stumps.  The soil must be cleared, tilled, and prepared for it to support and nurture life.

In the same way many of us before coming to Christ allowed sin to destroy the life in our relationships.  Because of our sin lifestyle we stood as condemned as that vacant, weed-infested, rocky, debris laden lot.

Submit yourselves, then, to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts.James 4:7-8

Once having rejected our sin and accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we become born again by the Spirit of God.  Much like a fresh new lawn gives that rough, rocky lot a born again appearance.  But our work has only just begun.  We must remain active and diligent in our Christian walk.

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…- 1 Pet 5:8-9

Compromising with less than pure soils and seed introduces invasive weeds that destroy the lawn.  A lack of proper watering makes the lawn susceptible to insects like chinch bugs and cutworms that live unseen beneath the surface and eventually choke the life out of the lawn.

Like our lawns, our spiritual health requires constant maintenance and diligence on our part to remain weed free and strong enough to withstand the storms of life.

…my dear friends… continue to work out your salvation … – Phil 2:12-13

Do you have a healthy root system, rooted deep in the living water of the Word of God?

Are you allowing some weeds to take root in your life through compromise?

Are you neglecting to feed your root system through worship, training and Christian fellowship?

Sin always takes us where we never intended to go. It keeps us there longer than we wanted, and ultimately sin costs us much more than we ever expected to pay.  As you spend time in lawn maintenance, may the Holy Spirit remind you of the need to maintain the ‘good soil’ of your heart also so that you may bear good fruit for the Kingdom of God.

B2B Concert of Prayer – Tender Heart #808

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 808

“Tender Heart”

2 Samuel 24:10-15 (NKJV)   And David’s heart condemned him after he had numbered the people. So David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done; but now, I pray, O Lord, take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”…

—————————————————————————————-

Even though David sinned many times God still referred to him as a man after His own heart.

According to the Bible, the heart is the center not only of spiritual activity, but of all the operations of human life. The heart is where our ‘personal life’ character exists such as honesty or purity.  The heart is also considered the source of our conscience.  Note that David’s heart condemned him and he repented.

Our hearts are naturally wicked and must be changed and regenerated before we can willingly obey God.  Our hearts are regenerated by the Spirit of God after we accept His free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.  This is when an all out war breaks out and our heart becomes a battleground.  A war is fought between our heart’s desire to love and serve God and our flesh’s desire for compromise with the sinful things of this world.

…but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. – Rom 7:23

We will fight this war until we die.  We may lose a battle every now and then as David did, but we continue to wage war against sin.  God knows very well how weak we are, which is why He looks at our heart.  He knows if our heart’s desire is to be faithful to His Word and to not compromise with the world.

Our heart needs to remain tender to the conviction of God’s Holy Spirit in order to be effective in fighting this war.  Our heart loses tenderness when we allow it to become calloused. Just as our skin develops a callous from repeated abrasion, so too our hearts become calloused when we try to have it both ways: living a life with one foot in the world and one in the kingdom of God.  A half-hearted attempt to serve God is not a heart after God’s own heart at all.

Hardness of heart evidences itself by consistent compromise and having an unrepentant attitude toward sin.  The hardened heart harbors sin and does not acknowledge or confess it.  If you find yourself drifting away from the Word and fellowship within the Body of Christ your heart is becoming hardened.  If you resist the conviction of the Holy Spirit and can only see the presence of sin in other people then your heart is being hardened.

May you have a heart after God’s own heart as David did.  May you recognize that purity of heart precedes the power to overcome the trials and temptations of this life.  May your heart be tender and yielding to the refining presence of Jesus.  May your heart manifest His purity and presence as you bring His pure light into the darkness of this world.

B2B Concert of Prayer – Imitators of God #807

CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 807

“Imitators of God”

Eph 5: 1 (ESV)  Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.

—————————————————————————————-

I saw a video of my 3 year old grandson playing a toy electric guitar and singing the lyrics to a popular Christian song.  He was imitating his dad who plays guitar as part of the praise and worship team in their church.

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to pick up the mannerisms and sayings of the people we spend the most time with? It is in our human nature to imitate and adapt to the ‘culture’ of our environment with children being the most impressionable.

We have tremendous power of influence by our example and such power carries with it an awesome responsibility to not lead others astray.  Under less than ideal circumstances, children like my grandson could very easily have been imitating the vulgar mannerisms and lyrics of gangsta rap or other less than wholesome secular music.

God cautioned the Israelites to be careful about imitation as He led them into the Promised Land.

When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. – Deu 18:9

Our secular work places are very much like the land the Lord warned the nation of Israel against.  How prepared were you to walk the walk of faith when you first entered the workforce? How prepared will your children be in school, college and the workplace?

Examine your family environmental and social contexts.  What influence is prevalent?  Does your home and family environment shield and protect your family from the sinful influence of this world?  Does it actively promote Christian values and work to equip your family with the full armor of God so that they can be influencers for Christ in the world?

We need to be in the world, but not of it. Are you as comfortable imitating God in the context of the work environment as you are in the church? Would you tell the same joke to your Pastor that you told at the office? Would you use the same expletive in Sunday school that you used to make your point at work?

As a leader in your home, workplace, government, or church does your example in word and action convey your Christian values?  Does your example glorify God and is it worthy of being imitated?

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. – Hebrews 13:7

May the Holy Spirit do a deep cleansing work in your heart so that you may be a powerful influence for Christ in your family and in this world.  May your children and others imitate your example as you imitate the example of Jesus.
