CONCERT OF PRAYER

Pray Week 812

“Living Stones”

Ephesians 2:19b-21 (ESV)    …but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

The century-old house I had in Massachusetts had a magnificent cornerstone of Vermont granite. All the other foundation stones were aligned with that cornerstone.  Ultimately the platform for the whole structure of the house depended upon the integrity of the foundation beginning with its cornerstone.

Peter refers to Jesus as a ‘living stone’ and as a ‘cornerstone’ in his first epistle.  He also states that as Christians, we too are like living stones.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house … acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” – 1 Peter 2:4-6

Consider the following:

Jesus is the only cornerstone that will hold us up through eternity.  We cannot be our own cornerstone.  We cannot build a secure foundation without the Chief Cornerstone of Jesus Christ in our lives, our families, society, or in our government.

We are also called ‘living stones’.  As born-again Christians we have a duty and a privilege to be built up into a spiritual house, the Body of Christ, His church.  As living stones we each have a unique shape, strength, and characteristics that are our gifts from God.  There is a place in the foundation wall of God’s spiritual house uniquely shaped for you to fit into.  Once in place, we are supported by Jesus Christ.  We also receive support and contribute support to our brothers and sisters in Christ that make up God’s spiritual house. This is the local church community.

Where is the ‘church’ in America today?  How severe are the gaps in our society’s foundation wall because of apathetic, lukewarm Christians?  Will the church stand by and watch as the Chief Cornerstone of Jesus Christ is removed and replaced with secular humanism?

Will the church rise up and repair the breaches in our nation’s wall as Nehemiah did in Jerusalem?

We are at a critical juncture in America today.  There are fundamental differences in the platform foundations that those who seek to lead us stand upon.  Have you read their platforms?  Do the values expressed therein align with that of the cornerstone of the Word of God or do they align with the substitute god of secular humanism?  Will you rise up and do something about it?  I pray that you will.
