“Infinitely Valuable”

Psalm 119:105 (ESV) Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

If you have seen any of the Ice Age movies you have probably fallen in love with the prehistoric squirrel-rat who has an insatiable passion for what seems to be the last remaining acorn.

While we may laugh at Scrat’s slapstick attempts to capture and keep his acorn – reflect for a moment on whether we share the same desire and passion to capture and keep the Word of God in our hearts and minds.

John Piper, Pastor and Theologian said: “It is impossible to exaggerate the worth of the Word of God.”  At a keynote address in July of 2011 in Atlanta, GA Pastor Piper outlined seven reasons why the Bible as God’s Word is of infinite value to us.  They are as follows:

1. The Word of God awakens and sustains faith.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. – Romans 10:17

2. It is by the Word of God that we receive the Holy Spirit.

Does he who supplies the Spirit to you … do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith… – Galatians 3:5

3. The Word of God creates and sustains our spiritual life.

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. – John 6:63

4. The Word of God gives us hope.

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through … the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. – Romans 15:4

5. The Word of God gives us freedom.

“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:31, 32

6. It is by the Word of God alone that we can defeat the devil.

…the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. – 1 John 2:14b

7. The Word of God is the source of full and lasting joy.

These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. – John 15:11

May you have an intense and persistent desire for the infinite and timeless truth of God’s Word. May you continually be in awe, reverence and worship of Almighty God as His Living Word awakens faith and sustains your spiritual life with all hope, power, freedom and joy through Jesus Christ.
