SWORD OF THE SPIRIT 1264
“Home”

Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. – John 14:23
My father served in WWII, enlisting at age 18. I recall how he described the feeling of returning home after the war ended. I served during the time of the Vietnam war, and I can relate to my Dad’s feelings when I too, received orders to return Stateside and to return home.
The word, ‘home’ conjures up many feelings. It is more than a building. Home is a place of comfort, peace, security, shelter, and love.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” – Psalm 91:1-2
This feeling of longing to be home and the comfortable feeling of being ‘at home’ is a temporary experience at best in this world.
Are you confident in your understanding that you have an eternal home with our Father in Heaven?
For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. – 2 Corinthians 5:1
Do we have this same longing to be ‘at home’ with the Lord?
So, we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. – 2 Corinthians 5:6-8
Reflect on the times in your life when you returned home from deployments or an extended time away. Do you have that same longing and sense of being ‘at home’ with respect to your relationship with the Lord?
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. – John 15:9
We can have the peace, comfort, and security of being ‘at home’ wherever we are and in whatever circumstances we find ourselves through the abiding presence of the Lord.
We are the sons and daughters of the living God, and we are at home with Him in this life and for eternity.
