“Lights in the World”
Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life…(Philippians 2:14-16)
I grew up in a world where people were politely addressed as ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’am’ and elders and parents were treated with respect.
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12)
I was taught by word and example that when your employer asks you to do something, as long as it was safe and ethical you did it to the best of your ability without grumbling or arguing.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24)
As I continue to work in my management career, I see that these character traits are all but gone in today’s work force. Sadly, the self-centered, what’s-in-it-for-me mind set of the generation of the entitled transcends the work place into all aspects of society and into the church as well.
I dare say that John Kennedy’s 1961 call to action: “Ask not what your country can do for you…”, would fall on deaf ears in the majority of today’s pool of voters.
The timeless validity of the application of God’s Word is evident in our reference Scripture from Paul’s letter to the Philippians. God is calling the church body to shine as lights in this crooked and twisted generation.
As those who profess to be Christians we are to:
Set the example for respect of parents and elders.
Set the example for a Biblical work ethic in our churches and places of work.
Set the example in exercising our right to vote and to vote biblical values.
Set the example by striving with God’s help to be blameless and live unblemished lives.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
May the Holy Spirit speak to your heart through the revelation of God’s Word and work to transform your life and character to shine as lights in this world. May you rise above the muck and mire of this crooked and twisted generation and live a life of integrity of character without compromise before God and your fellow man.
