“Up to the Task”

…His God instructs him and teaches him the right way… (Isaiah 28:24-29)

Failure or success concept.Have you ever noticed how professional sports players and teams seem to go through dry spells where they can’t seem to score or win a game no matter how hard they try? A prolonged slump is a difficult thing to break out of because the players have begun to lose confidence in themselves and their abilities.

How about you? Have you ever doubted your skills and abilities? Have you ever questioned whether or not you are up to a particular task? Perhaps you have a challenging new assignment at work that is causing you to doubt your chances of success. It could be that you and your spouse are expecting your first child and you wonder if you are up to the task of being a good parent. Maybe your pastor has asked you to take on a leadership role in the church and you are about to decline because of doubt in your abilities. It could be that you find yourself in a creative slump in your everyday work and you are wondering if you have lost your touch.

“See, I have called…and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship…And I have appointed…And I have given to all able men ability… (Exodus 31:2-6)

Listen to what God’s Word says: It is He that chooses, fills, appoints, and gives skills and knowledge. Whatever abilities and successes you have had in the past came from Him and not on your own merit. If you are doubting or fretting if you are up to the task at hand now it is because you have taken your eyes off of Him and are wrongly focused on yourself.

The solution is obvious. Seek Him first. Focus your eyes on Jesus and sincerely seek to glorify Him by all that you do. Offer it all up to Him and He will empower you from on high with the knowledge and skills that you need. Remember that whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men and you will find that you are up to the task. (Colossians 3:23-24)
